Till saken:
The Vovvegang:
Member Question: What's the downside to staying in Phase 1 for five weeks? I've been in Phase 1 since February 20. From February 20 to March 16 I lost 17 pounds. I started at 245 pounds and my goal is 220 (though I may now adjust downward).
Dr. Agatston: The problem with staying in Phase 1 for too long is that too rapid weight loss can include some loss of muscle and bone tissue, as well as fat, and this can lower metabolism and can result in yo-yo dieting. Also, you are missing the nutrient value of whole fruits. For those with a lot of weight to lose and prominent belly fat, you can extend Phase 1, but make sure that you get plenty of fluids to overcome water loss and that you exercise regularly to maintain your muscle and bone mass ? and therefore your metabolism.
Member Question: This is the third week of Phase 2 for me and my weight is fluctuating up. I've only added back one whole grain and one fruit. I have also started an exercise program this week. Is there anything else I can do?
Dr. Agatston: The test as to whether the diet has worked is loss of cravings and control of what you are eating. If you have indeed lost cravings, you can decrease portion size, but please do not leave a meal hungry or unsatisfied. If you are having large portions due to cravings or hunger that would be an indication to return to Phase 1. Another possibility is that carbs or sugars maybe sneaking into your diet ? discussing a food journal with our nutritionist would be a good idea. Also take into consideration that weight loss on Phase 2 is generally slower and there may be some fluctuations during the weight-loss process.
Member Question: Are long plateaus in between periods of weight loss common? Or can I expect to just keep losing a little at a time for an extend period?
Dr. Agatston: While it is often frustrating for those who are looking to lose weight quickly, slower weight loss is more permanent weight loss. As long as you've moved beyond cravings, please do not be discouraged by slow weight loss, because it is a more permanent loss. Individual plateaus may occur at different levels of the program due to different physiology and metabolism. If you've lost cravings and have control of your eating yet are still unhappy at where you have plateaued, the best choice is increased exercise. Especially toning and weight bearing exercises, which will increase resting metabolism.
Dr. Agatston: Severe calorie restriction will invariably lead to yo-yo dieting. But please hang in there and don't be discouraged by slower weight loss.
